On August 13, NOAA's Climate Prediction Center updated its monthly ENSO discussion. The wording was dry. The numbers weren't.

 

The agency now puts the odds of a very strong El Niño this fall and winter at better than 90%. It also put the odds at 69% that the October through December period beats every El Niño going back to 1950.

 

That's the forecast of a record, not just a bad season.

 

An El Niño Advisory is already active, the warmer water is already here.

 

Most coverage of this focuses on snow and rain totals. Those matter. But they're not what catches families off guard.

 

What catches families off guard is their tap water.

The part that keeps breaking

Your tap water doesn't fail just because a storm comes in, it fails because of what the storm disrupts and destroys.

 

If you're on well water, your pump runs on electricity, that means if there's no power, you can't get any water, even though your pipes are fine.

 

If you're on city water, flooding and storm damage can push contamination into the system before it ever reaches your tap. Then the utility issues a boil-water notice, and it stays up for as long as it takes.

 

Sometimes that's a day.

 

Sometimes it isn't.

 

After Hurricane Helene, Asheville, North Carolina sat under a boil-water notice for 53 days. The notice wasn't lifted until November 18, 2024. That's almost two months of not trusting your own kitchen sink, in a mid-sized American city, in a state with a working government and a working economy.

 

Jackson, Mississippi went weeks without safe water after its treatment plant was overwhelmed. Calgary lost its water main the week before New Year's.

 

And going to the store to get water isn't any kind of a plan.

 

The bottled water aisle empties within hours of a storm entering the forecast. Every time. It's the most predictable thing about a disaster.

The math nobody runs until it's too late

Emergency planners use a simple number. One gallon per person, per day, for drinking and basic sanitation.

 

For a family of four, planning two weeks, that's 56 gallons.

 

Stack that up and it's about 18 cases of bottled water. Close to 470 pounds. Two pallets you have to buy, haul, find room for, and rotate before it goes stale in the garage.

 

Now go back and look at Asheville. Fifty-three days.

 

Nobody stores 53 days of water. There isn't a garage in America with that in it.

 

So the families who came out of that fine weren't the ones who stored the most.

 

They were the ones who could keep making more.

 

That's the whole difference. Stored water is a number that only goes down. A filter isn't.

Picture it at your house

Say a hurricane comes through in October and takes the power with it. Not for a day. For two or three weeks.

 

Walk through what that actually looks like.

 

Day one is fine. You've got what's in the fridge and whatever you grabbed at the store.

 

Day three, the jugs are down to one. The stores are closed or picked clean, and the roads to the next town over are flooded.

 

Day five, nobody's had a real wash. There're dishes in the sink you can't run water over. Your youngest is asking for a bath.

 

And the whole time, there's water everywhere. It's in the rain barrel. It's standing in the yard. It's in the creek behind the house and the pond at the end of the street.

 

You just can't drink any of it.

 

That's the actual emergency, not no water. 

 

Unsafe water, everywhere you look.
